New: Charsa Designs Bridesmaid Dresses

Scarlett's Closet Sample Sale is proud to add Charsa Designs to its boutique collection.

Founded by Charlene Scheil in San Francisco, Charsa Designs offer the discerning woman really nice silks, strong contrasting colors and impeccable finish. Compared to other designers in Scarlett's Closet, Charsa dresses are really quite nice for their modest price.

Moreover, the styles seem to embody a distinctive personality which ranges in fabric, color, neckline and cut to compliment a rainbow of bridal color schemes. Perhaps this is because Charlene is inspired by the people in her life. Take Allie, for example:

These pretty party dresses in knee length, tea length and full length styles work equally well for wedding or cocktails.

All our Charsa dresses are one of a kind salon samples. This means you get a first quality designer original silk dress at a shockingly low price. Does the word, "hot cakes" ring a bell?

Mega Savings on Designer Bridal Gowns

What's Real? Organics v Synthetics

Recently a bride to be returned a beautiful Pronovias LaSposa wedding gown in the belief that "Pronovias wedding dresses are made in Spain and only in organic fabric."

On average, a woman looks at 100 dress styles before she finds "the one." We want her to be happy with her purchase. So when she returns a dress due to an error in description of condition, I correct this. When a dress is returned because of overall disappointment, I must look at the possibility that I omitted an important fact.

These are the facts about organic fabric versus synthetic fabric used in bridal and formal dresses:

Only dresses made of silk, cotton, flax, wool, hemp or bamboo can legitimately claim to be "organic fibers." Satin, taffeta, organza, linen, gazar describe weaves. Unless the fabric is woven in one of the above "organics," the fabric is synthetic.
And the correct term should be "traditionally produced silks and other natural fibers," or "organic natural fabric," because cotton is natural, but may not be grown under organic conditions. I'm thinking the manufacturer is taking liberties with language.

Following are a sampling of bridal designers who actually use natural, organic fabrics:

Olivia Luca Bridal

Deborah Lindquist Green Collection

Natural Brides

Otherwise, all bridal and formal gowns - regardless how famous the designer name - are made of synthetic fibers.

In terms of quality, fabric is available in many grades. So a Lazaro "BMW satin" wedding dress ($4,000) is going to look and feel a little finer than a satin bridal gown by Pronovias Barcelona ($3000.) A Pronovias La Sposa satin wedding dress ($1500) is less fine still. But none of these fabric grades is as cheesy as they can get. Trust me on this.

IRL, you can touch the fabric, feel it, try it on, see how it drapes and holds its shape in a full service bridal salon. Online, brides need accurate information from a credible seller. We believe we offer this.

Bridal Fabric Glossary

Smart shoppers also note Pronovias Fashion Group designs and manufactures Pronovias, Pronovias La Sposa, San Patrick, White One and Atelier Diagonal. Design is done n Spain. The country of origin varies.

This is equivalent to General Motors making Cadillac, Buick and Chevrolet. The corporation sets the standards and directs the styles. They gain market share by differentiating the lines by brand and get economies of scale by manufacturing together.

There are some fabulous bargains for brides willing to shop online. There are also some obvious pitfalls. Your online salon should be able to answer your questions about style, fabric and fit. Don't be afraid to ask. And be sure to read fully, ask lots of questions and read the information the website offers.

This will help us meet our goal and help you avoid disappointment when you find a beautiful bargain bridal gown online. My best wishes for finding the dress that reveals just how beautiful and happy you are.

Brides, Can You Spare $20,000 for a Dress?

Elizabeth Fillmore puts on a brave face in a shrinking economy. Despite near double digit unemployment nationwide, she's offering a style named "Medea" for a meer $19,580.

Color me "cheap," but there have to be better uses for $20K - an African safari or co-sponsorship of a Habitat for Humanity house, perhaps?

Oh well, "chacun a son gout," which is how the French say, whatever floats your wakeboard boat.

Is the Bad News Economy Affecting Your Wedding Plans?

If the answer is "yes," you're not alone. Eileen Connelly, AP Financial Writer, reports that many couples are postponing or scaling down their wedding plans due to recession pressures.

Dream weddings get caught up in economic nightmare

NEW YORK — Maria Ayson and Nolan Green Jr. should be married by now.

The couple set a date, picked their reception hall, bought the dress, booked the photographer and ordered the cake for a Saturday last August. Then came the bad news.

"When he got laid off, we were kind of caught with our pants down," said Ayson.

Rather than trying to plan a wedding while Green was looking for a new job in electronics retailing, the couple decided to push their date back a whole year. Ayson said putting off the "was the best thing for our sanity and for ourselves." Especially since his new job forced a move to Los Angeles, while she remained in San Francisco.

The delay until Aug. 9, 2009, also gave them time to rethink their wedding plans and try to find ways to scale back the party, without sacrificing on the celebration.

That's a step that countless couples are taking, as economic reality confronts one of consumer culture's most cherished institutions, the dream wedding.

Maids Dresses: Very Vera (Wang that is)

When we receive new Vera Wang maids dresses, I am struck by how edgy the styles compared to classic bridesmaid gowns.

I have this image of the Vera Wang design process. Think Meryl Streep playing Anna Wintour in "The Devil Wears Prada" meets bridal.

Vera has a department of deputy designers who do nothing but dream bridal wear. When Vera swooshes in, she rejects the ordinary, then takes a critical eye to the best.

"Move this seam."

"Add this accent."

"Exaggerate this drape."

... and like that.

When she's finished, each Vera Wang maids dress is both edgy and inimitably Vera.

Okay, well maybe not Anna Wintour or Meryl Streep, but definitely edgy and very Vera.

Vera Wang Maids dresses are new in Scarlett's Closet.
